GERUND

(KATA KERJA VERB 1 + ING YANG BERFUNGSI KATA BENDA)

GERUND is a verb+ ing form that is used as a noun, because of its function as a noun, so the gerund can function as: Subject, object of the verbs of prepositions and also Complements.

Look at the use of Gerund:

1.      As Subject of the Sentence.

Example:

-          Swimming once a week can make us healthy.

-          Having good education can be a future capital.

-          Reading alot is a must for every student.

-          Being a nurse is her ambition.

2.      As object of certain Verb.

Example:

Admit (mengaku)	Krisna admitted keeping secret documents.
Appreciate (menghargai)	We all appreciate your coming to this event.
Avoid (menghindari)	Grace avoids Tommy’s coming to the party.
Can’t bear ( tidak suka )	I can’t bear waiting for you too long.
Can’t help (tidak tahan)	I can’t help smiling after finding them.
Can’t resist (tidak tahan)	I couldn’t resist telling her his secret
Can’t stand (Tidak tahan)	If you can’t stand beeing treated like that, you can’t protest
Carry on (terus)	We can carry on talking about this case after lunch.
Consider ( mempertimbang)	I am considering changing my present job.
Deny (menyangkal)	That man denies selling drugs.
Detest (benci)	Miranda detests talking with a bad.
Enjoy (menikmati)	The students enjoy listening to western songs.
Escape (lepas/lolos)	The prisoners managed to escape being shot death.
Excuse (maaf)	Please excuse my coming late,sir
Fancy (membayangkan)	Oh,my God! I never fancy marrying to Cyntia.
Find( mendapati)	The policeman found the criminal hiding in the jungle
Give up(menyerah)	Finally,she gives up telling a lie.
Go on (terus)	You can go on working in this company.
Imagine(bayangkan)	I never imagine having a luxurious house.
Leave off( berhenti)	You must leave off making a trouble.
Mind ( gagal/ luput)	I don’t want to miss watching a world Cup final tonight.
Pardon(memaafkan)	Pardon me interrupting you,sir.
Postpone(menunda)	The goverment postpones rising the oil price.
Practice(praktek)	Let’s practice speaking English on Wednesdays.
Put off ( menunda)	Don’t put off doing your homework.
Recollect(mengingat)	I don’t recollect meeting Emillia.
Smell(mencium/membau)	I smell something burning here.
Suggest( menganjurkan)	The doctor suggests the patients having enough rest.

3.      As object of prepotions ( Sebagai object kata depan), for example:at, in, on, of,off,againts, after, before, for.

-          Andrian is good at designing houses.

-          My farida is clever at making  cakes.

4.      As predicate complements ( sebagai predikiat pelengkap).

-          Her hobby is swimming.

-          My favorite activity is watching TV.

5.      As modifiers as noun ( sebagai keterangan kata benda)

-          The waiting room is full of people.

-          The swimming pool is being renovated)

6.      Gerunds with their subjects.

-          Maya’s singingi is vey good.

7.      Gerunds with “it... ing”.

-          It nice sitting here with you.

Kata kerja forget, remember dan stop dapat diikuti oleh Gerund (verb+ing) atau to infinitive tetapi memiliki arti yang berbeda.

FORGET	FORGET
Rini forgets posting the letter (Rini sudah mengirim surat tapi dia lupa surat sudah dikirim)	Rini forgets to post the letter (Rini lupa mengirim surat. Surat belum dikirim karena dia lupa)
REMEMBER	REMEMBER
Mr. Yoko remembers locking the door ( pak Yoko telah mengunci pintu dan dia ingat telah mengunci pintu.	Mr.Yoko remembers to lock the door(pak Yoko ingat bahwa dia harus mengunci pintu.
STOP	STOP
I stop smoking cigarettes ( saya telah berhenti merokok. Saya tidak merokok lagi)	I stop to smoke cigarettes ( saya berhenti untuk merokok ( sebentar, dan nanti masih merokok lagi)).
